In the back room, Flaw Sight picks up the curse's full lattice from 12 feet (beyond his normal 10–15 foot range). Summary: Phelan arrives at 14 Greystone Lane, Guild HQ — a building so unremarkable he's walked past it six times in three years. He reads the ward work (detection array, three-layer inscription, secondary window wards recording foot traffic). The receptionist runs the eight-week waiting list filter; Phelan mentions his letter. The interview room is designed for discomfort: bare stone walls, shadow lighting, one chair facing three. The center man (~50, gray hair, quiet authority) is the decision-maker. The questioner (younger, broader, methodical) runs the list. Summary: Thursday: Phelan asks Leon for combat magic retraining. Leon agrees on transactional terms. Diagnostic session: fire sequences technically correct but slow ("your fire used to move like it was angry about something. Right now it moves like it's filling out paperwork"). The noise processes the brief: the actual target is verdenshade (not "Pallowmere Root" as stated — a moss-like plant thriving on accumulated magical residue). Barrows were originally a sealed repository, not storage. Two hours out, Flaw Sight picks up old diffuse magic. He stages a fire-supplies camp 20 feet from the entrance. Through Flaw Sight, the Barrows' ward architecture is enormous — multiple generations, the oldest woven into the stone. Ch08: The Third Door

Summary: Phelan wakes with reserves at ~80% (not full due to ambient Flaw Sight drain near the Barrows). Overnight noise processing produced a breakthrough: the ward's imperfect conversion creates continuous internal circulation — a side channel broadcasting the ward's own signature "like a heartbeat." He stashes the verdenshade in a rock crevice, re-enters through the dormant entrance, passes the dead crawlers. Second floor reached via a smooth ramp (bottleneck by design). Ch09: The Return

Summary: Phelan walks back to Drenwick on fading reserves (~12%, bracelet drawing steadily). First stop: Carterson's Supplies. Carter is in the back room — revealed as a forge-and-inscription workshop, not a storeroom. He's working on a set of four throwing knives with focusing channels and amplification nodes for an unnamed client (concealable magical weapons). Carter reads Phelan's condition from the timing (Friday night job, Saturday midday return) and inspects the neck wound. Professional care through competence.
