## 14. KDP COMPLIANCE — METADATA & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Amazon KDP has strict policies against metadata that references other authors' works in ways that could mislead customers. These rules apply to **all books in the series** and must be followed for every submission.
### Keywords
- **NEVER** use another author's name, series name, or trademarked title as a KDP keyword
- Describe the book's own qualities instead (e.g., "sarcastic mage protagonist" not "Dresden Files similar")
- All 7 keyword slots should describe this book's content, tone, or genre positioning
### Book Description
- **Do NOT** name specific comparable titles or authors anywhere in the description
- Describe the reading experience: "for fans of first-person fantasy with dry humor" rather than "for readers who love [Author]'s [Series]"
- Sell the book on its own merits — Phelan's voice, the case premise, and the world
### Cover Design
- Avoid visual compositions that closely mirror the cover style of well-known series in the same genre
- Differentiate through color palette, character pose/framing, and setting elements unique to Corvel
- When commissioning or reviewing cover art, compare against top-selling comparable titles to ensure distinctiveness
### General Rule
All metadata (title, subtitle, description, keywords, categories) must sell the book on its own merits. No references to other authors, series, or works anywhere in KDP-facing metadata.
### KDP Pre-Submission Checklist
Before every KDP upload, verify:
- [ ] No keywords contain other authors' names or series titles
- [ ] Book description does not name comparable titles or authors
- [ ] Cover art is visually distinct from major comparable series
- [ ] Title/subtitle cannot be confused with existing published works
- [ ] Review against Amazon's content guidelines: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200952510
> **Note:** The Writing Style Guide (Section 11) still references comparable authors as *internal tone targets* for Claude's writing. These references are for drafting guidance only and must **never** appear in any customer-facing metadata, descriptions, or marketing materials.
