+Winter had started to think about ending. Not decided yet — decided was still weeks off — but the kind of morning where the cold had stopped feeling like a wall and had started feeling like a thing that could be walked past. The light through the kitchen window was still the colour of pewter. The floor was still stone. But the stone was warmer than it had been a week ago, and my reserves had been warmer than they had been a week ago, and I had caught myself cataloguing warmth the way I used to catalogue wards.

The clerk pulled both cards toward her without picking them up, checked the seals against a reference plate mounted under the counter lip, and slid them back without comment.

+Jenet brought something baked in a tin that smelled like it had been thought about for a week. Carter brought a small wooden box and set it on the table and did not explain what was in it and did not need to. Jenet hugged Mere for almost long enough to be a statement. Carter put his hand on my shoulder for half a second and took it off again and said nothing, which was Carter's particular way of saying the things he did not say out loud.

Mere did not wait for him to reach her. She met him at the middle of the room and put her arms around him the way Mere put her arms around almost nobody, and Devod held her as a man holds the daughter who had stood at his bedside and counted his pulse for hours in the dark, and neither of them needed to say anything out loud. It lasted a breath longer than I expected and then they stepped back from each other at the same moment without coordinating it. He came to the table and stood beside me for a moment without speaking.

Leon's shoulders dropped a fraction. Carter's hand stopped rotating the drink he was holding. Devod put his glass down and looked at Ledger and did something with his face that I filed without being able to read.

The casing chased with inlay work in a script I did not recognise and immediately wanted to, the focal stone set behind a convex lens the size of a thumbnail, a graduated ring around the bezel etched in half-mark divisions finer than anything the Compact licensed to non-institutional use. The grip had been worn smooth by a hand that had held it for years and had known exactly what it was holding. I turned it over once and the lattice underneath — the thing Ledger could not see and I could — bloomed into focus under my attention the way old pre-Compact work always bloomed into focus: deeper anchoring, irregular node spacing, engineering that had been beautiful before the Compact had standardised beautiful out of the craft.

+
+These are the highest-priority flags. They are constructions that appear to be authorial tics — reaching for the same shape when under the pressure of drafting — rather than earned voice moves.

+### 1.1 The "Not X. Y." correction/refinement beat
+
+**Pattern:** A flat assertion immediately qualified by a one-word negation, then a substitute. Sometimes doubled ("Not X. Not Y. Z.").

+**Frequency:** ~20+ instances across three chapters. This is the single most dominant rhetorical shape in the establishing chapters.
+
+**Assessment — HABIT, with a voice-core.** Phelan's cataloguing brain *does* naturally refine by negation — that's consistent with the Section 5 "dry, precise observations" directive. But at this density the tic has escaped voice into reflex. Every paragraph-level nuance is being delivered in the same shape, which flattens the rhythm and makes the refinement feel performative rather than observed. Recommend keeping the five or six strongest and rephrasing the rest — especially the back-to-back clusters ("Not broken. Not flawed. Wrong…" / "Not improvised. Not experimental."). When a device appears twice in the same paragraph, it stops being voice and starts being wallpaper.

+**Frequency:** 17 "the noise" instances in Ch01–03 (per index), with ~8 of them functioning as this "noise-as-subject-with-processing-verb" kernel.

+**Assessment — PARTIALLY HABIT.** "The noise" as a named phenomenon is canonical and protected (CLAUDE.md Section 5). But personifying it as a subject that "processes," "logs," "files," "sorts," "runs," "resists" is a construction the author keeps reaching for as a transition device. It works once or twice per chapter as a narrative pivot; past that it becomes a mechanical pulley pulling the reader into the next beat. Recommend trimming Ch02 especially — the noise does something on its own four separate times in Ch02 and one of those instances could carry the other three.

+**Frequency:** Roughly a dozen instances, concentrated in the investigation sequences of Ch02 and Ch03.

+**Assessment — HABIT masquerading as voice.** Phelan's deductive voice absolutely uses inference-chaining, but the sentence-fragment "Which X." as a period-ending pivot is becoming the default gearshift between observation and conclusion. It's efficient, which is why the author keeps reaching for it, but efficient shapes used too often turn into a verbal tic. A reader starts to anticipate the beat. Recommend diversifying: occasionally let the inference land inline ("…which was itself data" is fine); occasionally make the reader do the connective work without the explicit "which" bridge.

+**Frequency:** 10+ instances, heavily concentrated at paragraph closings and scene-break beats.

+**Assessment — VOICE with a dose of habit.** The staccato catalogue is a genuine Phelan move — it reflects the cataloguing cognition and CLAUDE.md's Section 11 pacing note that action and investigation scenes "get clipped and precise." It's a feature. **But** it's being deployed as a scene-closer almost every scene break, which converts an effective device into a predictable cadence. Ch02 in particular leans on it twice within a handful of paragraphs ("Seven victims. Twelve sites. Escalating." / "Twelve sites. Seven confirmed victims. Escalating frequency."). Once per chapter is a stylistic signature; three times per chapter is furniture.

+**Assessment — HABIT, localised.** The "holds/held" echo across two adjacent paragraphs in Ch01 is intentional — that's the Mere-vs-Phelan confirmation beat and it works. But the construction then migrates into Ch02 ("the ceiling moved" used twice on the same page of training) where it is no longer thematic, just a grammatical reach. Keep the Ch01 Mere-budget usage; flag the Ch02 training-ceiling recurrence as unintentional echo.

+### 1.6 "Filed." / "I filed it." as a paragraph terminator

+**Examples:**

+## Section 2: Structural Repetition Patterns
+
+These are paragraph- and scene-level shapes the author keeps reaching for, independent of specific word choice.
+
+### 2.1 The "Three-beat catalogue paragraph"
+
+Nearly every establishing paragraph in all three chapters has the same architecture:
+
+1. **Physical detail** (setting, object, body language).
+2. **Observation about what that detail means.**
+3. **Meta-observation about why Phelan is noticing the meaning.**
+
+**Examples:**
+- Ch01 opening ("Godsday mornings had a particular quality…") — atmosphere → it's a domestic Godsday → Phelan files it as a "home where two people were awake but hadn't yet needed to speak."
+- Ch02 opening ("The courtyard behind the chandler's shop was dark…") — atmosphere → "not the comfortable dark…" → "the scorch marks had accumulated into a topographic map, and I'd started to read them the way other people read street signs."
+- Ch03 opening ("The folder had kept me up past midnight. Not by design — by architecture.") — physical fact → reframe → Phelan's meta on how Ledger's documentation is structured.
+
+**Assessment — VOICE baseline with habit risk.** This IS Phelan's cataloguing cognition. It's the correct default shape. The habit flag is that *every* scene begins with this three-beat. Consider occasionally dropping the reader into the middle of an action or a line of dialogue, or opening cold on a single sensory fact without the meta-layer. The rhythm of the book will read more like a writer's voice if the paragraph shapes occasionally vary.

+### 2.2 The "domesticity → interruption → case" scene structure
+
+Ch01, Ch02, and Ch03 all use the same macro-shape at the scene-break level:

+- Scene 1: Quiet domestic moment (kitchen table, ledger, apples / warm-up forms in courtyard / Mere at the kitchen table with the second folder).
+- Scene 2: Training or adjacent pragmatic activity (Leon sparring / Leon ring work / skipped training).
+- Scene 3: External pressure arriving (Devod's pilings / Ledger's briefing / victim interview).

+**Assessment — INTENTIONAL for Ch01 and Ch02, HABIT creeping into Ch03.** The parallelism between Ch01 ("before") and Ch02 ("after") is clearly deliberate — the index's "Different method. Same answer." callback marks it as a thematic echo. Ch03 inherits the shape by reflex when the chapter's purpose (investigation) could support a looser structure. Not a rewrite issue, but worth a deliberate check: does Ch03 need the same beat grid, or is it there because Ch01–02 set the cadence?

+### 2.3 Scene-closing epiphany parentheticals
+
+Almost every scene break is immediately preceded by a multi-line noise parenthetical that re-states the scene's takeaway in italic fragments. Sometimes there are two or three stacked.

+- Ch01: Three stacked parentheticals before the guild knock ("Quiet. The good kind…" / "Except the surplus is real…" / "Is probably the answer to a question I haven't figured out how to ask yet.")

+- Ch03: "One last thing. The craftsmanship…" closing the chapter.

+**Assessment — VOICE trending toward habit.** The Noise Convention (Section 5) explicitly permits this and the 4–6-per-chapter target is being met. But the **placement** is becoming mechanical: noise-spiral-before-every-break is itself a shape the reader will start to anticipate. The parentheticals are more effective when they surprise — mid-scene, mid-action — than when they reliably appear at the last beat before three asterisks. Consider occasionally letting a scene end on a spoken line or a physical action without the italic coda.

+### 2.4 "Adverb, single-word-sentence" confirmation beat
+
+**Pattern:** Short confirmation or acknowledgement fragments used as emphatic punctuation.
+
+**Examples:**
+- Ch01: "Helpful." / "Noted." / "Twelve." / "Twelve and a half."
+- Ch02: "I'll take ugly." / "Accuracy work, then." / "A fitting." / "Noted."
+- Ch03: "Obviously." / "Understood." / "Careful how?"
+
+**Assessment — VOICE.** This is Phelan-in-conversation at its most correct. Keep. Just be aware that "Noted." appears in Ch01 (from Phelan) and twice in Ch02 (from Phelan + from Carter echoing it back), and the Ch02 echo is a genuinely strong moment — protect it by not saturating the word in Ch04–05.

+## Section 3: Overused Transitions
+
+Transitions between scenes and paragraphs are where authorial habit shows up most visibly. The establishing chapters lean on a small set.

+### 3.1 Time-of-day scene openers
+
+Every scene break in Ch01 and Ch02 opens with a bell reference, a light reference, or a temperature reference.
+
+- "at fourth bell" / "at sixth bell" / "past eighth bell" / "late winter" / "the morning was warming" / "the light was fading" / "evening settled over Chandler's Row" / "The morning was cold. Late winter cold"

+**Frequency:** ~12 scene openings across three chapters use temporal/atmospheric framing.
+
+**Assessment — VOICE with habit risk.** Setting the bell is useful for the timeline continuity CLAUDE.md Section 12 requires. But using weather/light as the *same* opening move at every scene break reads as a template. The fix is variety of angle, not elimination — occasionally open on an object, a line of dialogue, or an action-in-progress instead.

+**Assessment — VOICE.** First-person terse action. Correct for Phelan. Not a problem — flagged only because it's an answer to the question "is the prose varied?" The answer is: at the sentence level, yes; at the rhetorical level (see Section 1), less so.

+### 3.3 "The [thing] was [adjective]" atmospheric scene-setters
+
+- Ch01: "The courtyard behind the chandler's shop was empty…"
+- Ch02: "The courtyard behind the chandler's shop was dark at sixth bell…"
+- Ch02: "The receptionist looked up with practised warmth…"
+- Ch03: "The arcane district occupied the northeast quarter…"
+- Ch03: "The warrens occupied the southwest corner…"
+- Ch03: "The afternoon light was already thinning…"
+
+**Assessment — HABIT, mild.** Note that Ch01 and Ch02 literally open a scene with the *identical* phrase "The courtyard behind the chandler's shop was…" — that's a hard echo inside three chapters that deserves one of them to change. The "X occupied the Y corner/quarter" construction is also used twice for Drenwick districts in Ch03 alone.

+### 3.4 "Different method. Same answer." / "Same number" callback
+
+- Ch01: Phelan and Mere do the budget two ways. "Different method. Same answer." is the capstone and chapter-closer.
+- Ch02 closer: "Different method. Same answer." appears verbatim as the final line.
+
+**Assessment — INTENTIONAL CALLBACK (see Section 5).** Flagged here for completeness. This is load-bearing and should be protected.

+## Section 4: Intentional Voice Patterns (Not Problems)
+
+These patterns appear frequently and are protected by CLAUDE.md. They are listed so future editors don't mistake them for crutches during cleanup passes.
+
+### 4.1 "The noise" parentheticals — italic fragment tangents
+
+Canonical per Section 5 and Section 9 ("The Noise Convention"). Target is 4–6 per chapter in establishing chapters. Ch01 hits 6, Ch02 hits 7, Ch03 hits ~6. Within tolerance. Do not prune these for repetition — they are the feature.
+
+### 4.2 Cataloguing observation about people
+
+Phelan describing characters as systems — "a trim woman with the suspicious efficiency of someone who managed property in the arcane district," "the exhausted composure of someone who'd been holding a household together through sustained crisis," "the practised disinterest of someone who spent most of her day telling people that the prices were the prices." This is Section 5's "cold reader" directive. Correct and protected.

+### 4.3 Precise-angular-calibrated-deliberate adverb cluster (Phelan technical register)
+
+The index flags "precisely" (6), "deliberately" (6), "calibrated" (3), "angular" (3) as adverb-density concerns. Most of these are in service of describing Ledger, wards, or magical construction, where precise language is the point. Keep them. Only the Ch02 "Ledger's handwriting — precise, angular" matches Ch01's identical earlier "Ledger's handwriting — precise, angular, the penmanship of a man who treated communication as engineering" — that's a **genuine duplication** (see Section 5.2 below, it's intentional) so it gets protected there.

+
+The establishing thematic callback of the entire trilogy of chapters. Established in Ch01 with Mere's budget, echoed mid-Ch01 with Leon's training ("Mere would say it's the same number. Leon would say it's a half-second of not dying"), and closed as Ch02's final line. **Load-bearing. Protect verbatim.** This is the rhythmic spine of Phelan's recalibration of his relationship with Mere that Section 4.1 of the Book 2 arc tracks.

+## Summary of Priority Edits
+
+If an editor passes through Ch01–03 with a repetition cleanup mandate, the highest-leverage cuts are:
+
+1. **Reduce the "Not X. Y." correction beat from ~20 to ~8 instances.** This is the single biggest tic.
+2. **Trim "the noise [verb]" as a transition crutch** — keep it as a cognition marker, stop using it as a scene-break gear-shift.
+3. **Diversify "Which meant/Which was" inference sentences** — especially in Ch02.
+4. **Change one of the two "The courtyard behind the chandler's shop was…" scene openers** (Ch01 fourth-bell vs. Ch02 sixth-bell) — verbatim echo at the scene level is the most visible habit in the establishing sequence.

+Everything in Section 4 and Section 5 is protected. Do not touch "the noise" as a phenomenon, do not touch "Different method. Same answer.", do not touch the twelve-seconds training ladder, do not touch "Ledger's handwriting — precise, angular" on its second appearance (it's a deliberate tag), do not touch the thematic "quiet" framing.
